Cuba's Report to the United Nations General Assembly on the Blockade

Cuba's most recent report to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on the material effects of the illegal U.S. blockade has been published. During this year's session of the UN General Assembly, the people of the world will once again, for the 31st year in a row, overwhelmingly condemn this cruel and genocidal policy of the United States government against the Cuban people.

The cost of 12 hours of the blockade is equivalent to the purchase cost of the insulin required to cover national needs during one year (USD 12,000,000). The cost of 25 days of the blockade is equivalent to the financing necessary to meet the requirements of the country's National List of Essential Medicines during one year (around USD 339,000,000). The cost of 4 months of the blockade is equivalent to the financing required to guarantee the distribution of the rationed family food basket to the population during one year (around USD 1,600,000,000. More examples of how this cruel act of economic war can be seen in the graphic below or in the full report.

It's Official: 'Havana Syndrome' Was a Hoax

Global Affairs Canada has released a detailed report admitting that the Havana Syndrome was a hoax. The accusations that have been irresponsibly and cynically levelled at Cuba have now been officially deemed false. The symptoms reported by Canadian government officials in Cuba, according to the report, "were not the result of a malicious act of a foreign actor or foreign actors and that pre-existing medical conditions, environmental factors and conventional illnesses were likely to have been important factors in many of the symptoms experienced."

The report concludes: "The Interdepartmental Task Force has determined that there is no evidence to attribute the health symptoms experienced by Canada-based staff members and their dependants in Havana, Cuba to a foreign actor or foreign actors. Global Affairs Canada arrives at these conclusions after having investigated the reported incidents and symptoms, including the theory of attacks from unknown or malicious entities, through various initiatives, including the RCMP’s investigation, environmental assessments, and the Nova Scotia Health Authority MOA."

Unexplained Health Incidents in Havana, Cuba - Report by Global Affairs Canada
This report outlines the work undertaken by Global Affairs Canada and the Interdepartmental Task force to protect Canada-based staff members and their families from further “unexplained health incidents” (UHI) experienced in 2017-18 by Canada-based staff members (CBS) and their dependants in Havana, Cuba.

CNC Podcast Episode 2!

On this episode of the CNC Podcast, host and co-chair of the Canadian Network on Cuba, Samantha Hislop, is joined by her co-chair Julio Fonseca and executive committee member Cam Scott. The three of them discuss the new report from Global Affairs Canada that has concluded that no evidence exists to support the accusation of the so-called Havana Syndrome and the new report from Cuba on the US blockade for the United Nations General Assembly.

Cubacan Cares Campaign for Medical Sutures

The CNC continues its partnership with Cubacan Cares to collect donations for medical sutures to send to Cuba.

Our primary campaign, endorsed at this summer's convention, is Cubacan Cares, through which we hope to send urgently needed medical sutures to Cuba. The good news is that the campaign is sitting at around $7,651, about 75% of the way to the minimum amount required to place an order for sutures; though there's no reason to stop at the minimum!

Why are we fundraising for medical supplies on behalf of Cuba, which has a remarkable healthcare system and more doctors than any other country per capita? The reason, of course, is the blockade, which cruelly carries out a genocidal war on the Cuban people for daring to protect their right to self-determination.

Every suture we send could potentially save a life.

Sign the Petition Before October 16!

Bloc Québécois MP Gabriel Ste-Marie is sponsoring a Parliamentary e-petition calling on the Canadian government to take action to end the US blockade of Cuba.

Petition e-5014 (available here) notes that the international community has repeatedly shown its support for the Cuban people and its opposition to the blockade, particularly through votes at the United Nations General Assembly.

The petition calls on Ottawa pressure the US government to lift the blockade and to remove Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.

The Canadian government is also called upon to denounce the blockade as one of the key barriers to the Cuban people’s full enjoyment of their human rights, and to ensure that corporations and other entities in Canada do not participate in the economic sanctions against Cuba.

The petition ends with a call to ensure that relations with Cuba continue to be based on equality and respect for sovereignty, independence and the right to self-determination.

The petition is open for signatures until October 16. The Canadian Network on Cuba is calling on all people in Canada, especially those one million annual visitors who have seen Cuba for themselves, to sign the petition demanding the end of the economic war and campaign of subversion against the people of Cuba. By gathering as many signatures as possible a powerful and clear message can be sent to Ottawa.
