CNC August 2024 Newsletter

WE ARE BACK!
You may have noticed that the Canadian Network on Cuba stopped publishing its monthly newsletter earlier this year. What you may not know, however, was that this was not our decision, nor was it a consequence of neglect.
The former website that hosted our newsletter, Substack, "removed [our] publication from public view due to a violation of Substack's Spam & Phishing policy." This was quite a surprise to us. Yet, despite our best efforts to appeal the decision and to gain a more detailed explanation for this measure, we received no clarification.
While we can speculate as to the reason behind the publication ban, we may never know the truth. Nonetheless, we are happy to have migrated over to a new platform, Ghost, to continue bringing you our monthly newsletter.
CUBACAN CARES CAMPAIGN FOR MEDICAL SUTURES

For the third time Cubacan helps bring together two great organizations, the Canadian Network on Cuba (CNC) and Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR).
Cubacan approached a number of people in the medical field in Cuba and received a long list of needs. One item that appeared on every list was sutures.
A needle and thread are a critical part of every surgical procedure. Everything from a minor cut to a microscopic procedure, from cesarean births to open heart surgery, they all require sutures; from a few to multiple.
Every suture we send could potentially save a life. Our goal is to provide enough sutures to save lives in every corner of Cuba. Our minimum goal is 15,000 sutures. That is just the beginning, the sky is the limit.
There are two ways to make a donation - by mailing a cheque or by e-Transfer, to the CNC. Please note, that both the CNC and Cubacan are not registered charitable organizations and do not issue tax receipts.
Mail a cheque payable to:
Canadian Network on Cuba
PO Box 99051 – 1245 Dupont St.
Toronto, Ontario

or
Send an e-Transfer to: donate@canadiannetworkoncuba.ca
Autodeposit is turned on, so no security questions are required. Please, in the memo/message section, specifically indicate WHAT the donation is for (Cubacan Cares medical sutures), and include your first and last name, and email address. Without this information, we cannot properly allocate funds and know who our supporters are. e-Transfers that come through do not include any of this information unless you actually type it in.
CNC PODCAST
An unfortunate trend that Cuba solidarity activists in Canada face today is what seems to be a recent increase in disinformation regarding Cuba in the corporate media. One of the responsibilities of the CNC is to counter this type of disinformation whenever it appears. For this reason, the CNC executive committee has decided to create a podcast to directly address the falsehoods which are spread about Cuba in the media. The podcast will be posted in video form on Youtube and Facebook, with the audio available through various streaming platforms. In the episode posted below, CNC executive committee members Samantha Hislop, Julio Fonseca, Isaac Saney and Cam Scott discuss the U.S. blockade on Cuba, the false claims that Cuba is influencing elections in the U.S. and Venezuela, and what a Kamala Harris and Tim Walz White House could mean for U.S.-Cuba relations.
The podcast can be watched on YouTube or streamed on Souncloud.
MONCADA DAY 2024
This past July 26th marked the 71st anniversary of the infamous raid on the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba which sparked the beginning of the Cuban Revolution. If you missed our joint webinar with the U.S.-based National Network On Cuba, you can watch it in full below.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY FIDEL!
Another important anniversary that took place recently was the 98th anniversary of Fidel Castro's birth on August 13th. In the short video below, Fidel's commitment to internationalism is highlighted.
